We acknowledge being somewhat indifferent when it comes to medals, trophiesand other prizes being awarded to those in the wine making industry, it seems justaboutevery maker we're aware of wins somethingor other for one of their wines (at some time or other,) and which makes us nervous thatif we mention a particular award we’re going to have to mention every single one of them – and thatwould consume every article every week of the year.
But in thisinstance we need to give recognition to one commendation that’sjustbeen given as it’s a world first – and thatwe can mention it because the wine’s sold outanyway. That’s the Semillon Trophy at the 2015 InternationalWine and Spirit Competition thatwas won for an astonishingfifth year in a row by the Hunter Valley’s McGuigan Wines – the first time ever anyone has attained such a feat.
The record-setting 2015 winning wine was McGuigan’s Bin 9000 Semillon 2006 vintage that Chief Winemaker, Neil McGuigan sums up as having been “a true Hunter style Semillon, fresh and light when young, and which will develop rich honey and toastcharacters with extended cellaring over the next 10+ years.”
Medium bodied and full of gooseberry and lime on the palate, with fresh acidity and a lingering finish, it justaboutmarched off the shelves, to the disappointmentof those who were too late to purchase a bottle or two.
