THE village of Egwudunagu, Amachi community in Abakaliki Local Council of Ebonyi State was at the weekend struck with anger and sorrow when news filtered in that a 40-year-old man, one Alex Nwabu, had allegedly raped to death a 34- year-old widow, Mrs. Ogodo Egede.
Though the Ebonyi State Police Command has not confirmed the incident, a family source said that Mrs. Egede, a mother of four, had been raped to death by Nwabu.
Nwabu, who committed the act in the deceased’s house in the night, was said to have been having a constant affair with the widow with a threat to kill her if she dared disclose it to anybody.
The poor widow, who had been working as an artisan to cater for her children, was seen with bruises all over her motionless body following the incident.
According to the family source, when the suspect continued the act, the widow’s daughter, a 13- year-old girl, was forced by Nwabu to leave the house for threatening to expose him.
“The girl ran to her grandparents in the night because Nwabu threatened to kill her. She came to greet her mother in the morning only to see that she was dead and was covered with a wrapper.”
“The girl went and informed the grandfather that her mother was dead. She had told the grandfather about Nwabu’s action in the night,’’ the source added.
The youths of the area had declared a search party for the suspect on hearing of his action and later got him in his father’s compound.
On interrogation, he admitted committing the crime.
Nwabu said: “Mrs. Ogodo was owing me N1, 500 and when I visited her for the payment, she refused to pay. I actually asked her for sex and she also refused. I later used force on her and I did not know she would die because I didn’t want to kill her.”
“But she struggled with me, which annoyed me and I beat her up, I had sex with her for several hours,’’ he confessed.
In an interview, the widow’s father, Chief Ogbonna Ogayi, said his granddaughter ran to him in the night and reported that Nwabu came to their house and started harassing her mother with a cutlass.
He said: “I had told my daughter to leave the late husband’s home and come to my house so as to take care of her and the children, even though I’m having financial challenges and lots of responsibilities, but she did not agree.”
“She said her late husband had no immediate brother and relatives, that she would not like the lineage to go into extinction and would, therefore, remain there,’’ he added.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA 1) mortuary while the suspect is currently cooling off his heels at the Central Police Station (CPS), Abakaliki.
Mrs. Ogodo left three girls and a cripple boy behind. Her last child is a year old and was still sucking.
Enquiries by The Guardian at the local police station, was referred to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chris Anyanwu, for comments on the matter.
