Odegbami counsels youths

August 1, 2015 : Olufemi Atoyebi

Former Nigeria captain, Segun Odegbami, has urged Nigerian youths to believe in   themselves to enable them to realise their dreams.
Odegbami, who spoke at the Oodua Youth Conference in Ibadan on Thursday, said that many youths in the South-West had found themselves in difficult situations because they lack self-belief.
Making reference to the story of his life success, Odegbami said that he seized the moment to improve his life when he was presented with the opportunity to play for the country.

President of the OYC, Moronkeji Oladapo, said the event was aimed at helping   youths realise their dreams.

Odegbami said, “If you find yourself in a position of street cleaning, do it with dignity and pride so that the world will say that you are the best.

“This is the secret of attitude. Our youths need to imbibe the spirit of good attitude to excel in life and contribute to the development of our society.

“Education and information are two basic components our youths lack. We have many of them engaged in okada business because they lack information about how to be the best.

“It is not enough to go to secondary school or earn a certificate. We must provide our youths with information so that they will have a better view of life.

“In my sport (football), I discovered the power of belief and held on to it. When I had the opportunity to showcase my talents in football, I did it so well that I was included in the national   team that was going to the Olympics. The list had already been submitted to the international body, but it was withdrawn for my name to be included. You don’t have to come first to be the best.”
