Prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday led thousands of their supporters to dump their party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The National Secretariat of the APC, led by the deputy national deputy chairman north, Alhaji Lawan Shaibu and the party’s National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni were in Maiduguri to receive the defecting politicians.
The state chairman of the APC, Ali Bukar Dalori, said the defection of the PDP stalwarts marked a new beginning for the APC towards a greater political future.
The APC national secretary, described the event as a watershed in the annals of political history of Borno and the northeast in general.
He said “those dumping the PDP for the APC have made the best decision as the APC under President Muhammadu Buhari is a moving training that is ready to take Nigerians, especially those in the northeast to the promised land”.
The party’s National Vice Chairman informed the defecting politicians, to whom he later presented the APC flags, that they would be given fair treatment in the party as long as they were ready to work with President Muhammadu Buhari in rebuilding Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf of the defecting PDP politicians, Barrister Muhammed Kumalia, one time Minority Leader at the Federal House of Representatives between 1999 and 2003, said his decision to join the party was more of a homecoming.
Kumalia, who was once the Governorship candidate of Action Congress (AC) in the 2007 general elections said he led thousands of supporters to join the APC “because it is the new thinking of our people, and as politicians, we must always strive to work and do what is the prevailing interest of our people”.
Kumalia urged the party leaders in Borno state to live up to their promise of giving everyone a level playing field in the party, even as he emphasised that he had not joined the APC because of one political office or the other.
Those that defected include the former national treasurer of the PDP, Alhaji Lawan Kareto, former PDP House of Reps member, Hajia Kaamuna Khadi, and former PDP house of Reps candidate in the last elections, Honorable Muhammed Adamu, amongst others.
